Godalming is thirty and two tenths of a mile from Heathrow, about forty-seven minutes when both roads are clear. The route runs north up the A3 and then round the M25 to the airport spur — and that detail carries a conclusion most Godalming travellers get wrong.
| From Godalming | Road distance | Free-flowing time | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heathrow | 30.2 miles | about 47 minutes | A3 north, then M25 |
| Gatwick | 40.1 miles | about 49 minutes | A3 north, then M25 |
On a map Gatwick sits east of Godalming and looks like the obvious choice. By road it is almost ten miles further and a couple of minutes slower, because there is no quick east-west route across this part of Surrey. The fast way to either airport is the same way — north up the A3 and onto the motorway — and Heathrow is simply closer once you are on it. The cross-country line to Gatwick through Cranleigh and Horsham is about five miles shorter and roughly ten minutes slower.
If your flight could leave from either, that is worth knowing while the tickets are still refundable. Our Godalming airport taxi guide sets out both airports in full, including what the office asks when it quotes.
The A3 northbound carries the Guildford and Esher commute and is slow by habit rather than by incident. The M25 between the A3 junction and the airport is one of the busiest stretches in Britain and frequently closed overnight for roadworks. Forty-seven minutes assumes both are moving; in the peak either can add half an hour on its own. A driver who works this corridor knows which is misbehaving before setting off.
Coming round the M25 you reach Terminal 5 first; the central terminals and Terminal 4 mean carrying on round the site. A few minutes, and on a tight bag drop a few minutes is the whole question — so the terminal goes on the booking.
There is no direct train from Godalming to Heathrow. Any rail route means changes with your luggage, usually through London, which for an early bag drop or a family with hold bags is not a serious option. This is why nearly all airport work from Godalming is a booked car.
Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator rather than a hackney carriage firm, so every journey comes through the office as a booking — we cannot be flagged down and we do not work ranks. Because the office sees the whole journey first it can price it up front, so a bad morning on the A3 or the M25 is our problem rather than an addition to your bill.
Godalming is in Waverley, one of the seven authorities our drivers and vehicles are licensed across, with Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley, Elmbridge, Guildford and Transport for London. Our Godalming office is at Station Approach, GU7 1EU, and the operator licence is held as Epsom & Ewell Cars T/A Clocktower Cars.
Nights, very early mornings, Sundays and public holidays cost more to staff, and most airport work from Godalming leaves before six — which is also when both roads are at their best.
Four adults with four hold bags and four cabin bags do not fit in a saloon. An estate takes four with real boot space; six and eight-seaters take groups. Golf clubs, ski bags, a pushchair, a bike in a box, a dog crate — each changes which car is sent, so each needs declaring when you book.
On an arrival the pickup is set against the actual landing time, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and reclaim; waiting beyond it is chargeable.
Child seats, step-free access, a wheelchair, a pet travelling, an extra pickup in Milford or Farncombe on the way — all cheaper designed in than improvised. See our accessible taxi page.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and re-entering triggers it again. It is the airport’s charge rather than a taxi firm’s, and we say when it applies. Source: Heathrow Airport — drop-off charge. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount even when they are not driving, registered against the registration of the car bringing them.
Our cars do not carry card terminals, so bring cash if you have not paid in advance. The detail is on our pricing and payment methods page, and the reasoning behind quoting rather than publishing a rate card is in our guide to what actually decides a taxi price.
Thirty and two tenths of a mile by road, about forty-seven minutes in free-flowing traffic, up the A3 and round the M25 to the airport spur.
Heathrow, by a clear margin, which surprises most people. Heathrow is 30.2 miles and about forty-seven minutes; Gatwick is 40.1 miles and about forty-nine. On a map Gatwick looks nearer, but there is no quick road east — the fast route goes north up the A3 and round the M25, which is the long way round.
Work back from your airline’s bag-drop deadline, add the forty-seven minutes, then add a real margin for the A3 and the M25. Two roads have to behave, and in the morning peak neither reliably does.
It depends on the hour, the terminal, the vehicle your luggage needs and whether waiting or flight tracking is involved, so we quote each journey rather than publish a figure that would date. Call our Godalming office on 01483 422 222 with the flight and the bag count.

Yes. The pickup is set against the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and baggage reclaim — which matters on a journey of this length.
Yes. For five to eight passengers one larger vehicle is normally cheaper than two cars and always simpler at the terminal, because everybody arrives together. Give us the passenger count and the bag count separately.
