Stoneleigh is a suburban area of about 8,700 people in the north of the Epsom and Ewell borough, roughly 11 miles from central London. It is unusually easy to date: the station was built in 1932, and it is what created the place. Most of Stoneleigh went up in the years immediately after, and the build-out was largely finished by the outbreak of war in late 1939.
Before that the land was part of the Great Park and Little Park of Nonsuch in the Tudor era. Nonsuch Park today sits on the site of the Little Park, at the eastern edge of the suburb, running across into East Ewell and Cheam.

Stoneleigh station is in London fare zone 5 — and it is the only National Rail station in zone 5 that is not in a London borough. It sits in Surrey, and it is in the zone purely because of how close it is to the Greater London boundary.
Practically, that means Stoneleigh commuters get a zone 5 fare from a Surrey address, and it is 11 miles 74 chains (19.2 km) from London Waterloo on South Western Railway. Which in turn is why so much of our Stoneleigh work is the short run to and from the station rather than the long run into town.
Ewell has two stations, and the one that serves West Ewell is Ewell West, on South Western Railway, 12 miles 78 chains (20.9 km) from London Waterloo. It has been in London fare zone 6 since 2007 — so two adjoining neighbourhoods here sit in different fare zones, which catches people out when they compare season tickets.
One piece of history worth knowing, because it still shapes the area: from 1905 to 1950 Ewell West had a connection to the Horton Light Railway, built to carry building materials out to the cluster of hospitals in the Horton Lane area. That hospital cluster is why this part of Ewell has the road pattern it does.
In 2019 a new upgraded footbridge opened at Ewell West providing step-free access — which matters if you are choosing between stations with a wheelchair, a pushchair or heavy cases. Gatwick is the quicker airport from here — about 29 minutes against 34 — despite being further away in a straight line than most people assume.
And look at the two Heathrow rows. One route is 15.8 miles and the other is 27.1 — eleven miles longer — and they differ by a single minute. At Gatwick the same thing happens in reverse: the shortest route, 17.1 miles down the A217, is the slowest of the three, and the longest is the fastest.
This is why we quote the journey rather than charging by the mile. A per-mile rate would bill you almost twice as much for the Heathrow run that takes one minute longer. You tell us where and when; we give you a figure for that job; the driver then takes whichever road is actually moving, and the price does not change because he went the long way round.
Two pieces of open ground shape journeys here. Nonsuch Park, on the Tudor Little Park of Nonsuch, sits at the eastern edge of Stoneleigh and runs into East Ewell and Cheam — a large perimeter with several entrances, so name the gate or the car park when you book rather than saying “Nonsuch”. And the Hogsmill River, the chalk stream that rises in Ewell and runs down to the Thames at Kingston, gives this area most of its green space and its footpaths.
