Stansted is the furthest airport we run to, and that one fact shapes everything about booking a car there. Epsom to Stansted is 72.7 miles and about 1 hour 41 minutes. Stansted is also a Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI base, which means a lot of very early departures. Put those two together and a 4 AM Stansted flight needs a pickup at around 2 AM from most of Surrey. Nobody enjoys that, but knowing it in advance is the difference between a calm start and a missed flight.

The 29-mile detour that saves nothing

Look at the two Kingston rows. The A406 and M11 route is 51.5 miles. The M25 route is 80.5 miles. The shorter one is 29 miles shorter and still five minutes slower, because it crawls across north London at about 28 mph while the motorway holds about 45.

That is the largest mileage gap we have measured anywhere on our network, on any airport. It is also the clearest possible argument against pricing an airport transfer by distance: twenty-nine miles of apparent saving buys you precisely nothing, and costs you five minutes. We take the motorway.

Why Stansted is the airport to book earliest

Compare the whole network. Weybridge to Heathrow is about 19 minutes. Reigate to Gatwick is about 22. Weybridge to Luton is about 58 minutes. Epsom to Stansted is 1 hour 41. Stansted is in a different category, and the booking needs more margin than any other airport we serve.

The 4 AM Stansted flight: working the pickup time backwards

People search for exactly this, so here is a straight answer rather than a marketing paragraph.

For a 04:00 departure, a low-cost carrier will usually want you at the airport around 02:00 to 02:30. The drive from Epsom is about 1 hour 41 at that hour, and the roads are empty, so allow a round two hours with a margin. That puts the pickup at roughly midnight to 00:30.

For a 06:00 departure, wanting to be there by 04:00, the pickup is around 02:00. For a 07:00 departure, around 03:00.

Those are starting points, not promises. Worth being plain about this. Stansted is in Essex, north-east of London, 31 miles from Central London in the opposite direction from Surrey. A Stansted airport taxi from Epsom or Kingston is a three-and-a-half-hour round trip for the driver before they pick up another job. Any firm quoting you a suspiciously low Stansted fare has either not understood the journey or is planning to revisit the number. We would rather tell you the real figure and have you book it once.

On a run this long, one larger car rather than two smaller ones is a significant saving as well as far less trouble to keep together on the M25. For some journeys, genuinely not, and we would rather say so. The Stansted Express runs every 15 minutes to London Liverpool Street with a usual journey time of 45 to 53 minutes. If you are already in or near the City, the train is hard to beat.

• Your flight is before about 07:00. At Stansted that is extremely common, and it is before the useful rail connections from Surrey exist at all.
• You are starting in Surrey. From Epsom, Godalming or Banstead the rail route means getting across London to Liverpool Street first, then the Express. Three legs and a lot of luggage handling.
• There are three or more of you. One fixed fare split beats three or four Express tickets plus the connections.
• You are coming back late. A delayed evening arrival and a cross-London rail trip home is a poor end to a holiday.

Stansted is the fourth-busiest airport in the UK and carries a serious amount of business traffic.
