Neither Carshalton station is on the Brighton Main Line, so there is no direct train to Gatwick. Getting there by rail means reaching East Croydon first — realistically the SL7 express bus, roughly 20–25 minutes from Carshalton High Street — and then a Gatwick service of about 14–15 minutes. Call it 34–41 minutes of moving time before you have waited for anything, with luggage, twice. A car door to door beats it comfortably, and by a lot at 4am.
Heathrow is roughly 55 minutes from Carshalton and about 56 from Wallington — near enough double the Gatwick run, because it means crossing to the far side of London or going round on the M25. St Helier Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children share a site on Wrythe Lane, Carshalton, SM5 1AA — for much of Carshalton it is the nearest hospital, and a short run.
