Sutton has one big station and a ring of small ones, and the small ones are close enough together that “the station” is genuinely ambiguous. Naming it saves everyone a phone call.
The main one, in London fare zone 5, served by Southern and Thameslink. Off-peak that is roughly four trains an hour to London Victoria, two to London Bridge, four to St Albans City and two to Epsom and Epsom Downs.
That St Albans figure is the one worth noticing. It means Sutton has direct Thameslink trains straight through central London — Blackfriars, Farringdon, St Pancras — without changing. It is one of the reasons people move here, and it is why the short station run at twenty past six in the morning is our most common Sutton booking.
The station approach and the one-way system around it are tight at peak times. Give us your train’s arrival time rather than your ticket time and we will hold the car close by and bring it in when you are actually off the platform.
Five smaller stations sit within a couple of miles of the town centre, and two of them matter more than their size suggests:
“Carshalton” and “Carshalton Beeches” are different platforms in different parts of Carshalton. “West Sutton” is not Sutton. Thirty seconds on the phone beats fifteen minutes in the wrong car park.
Sutton sits on the A217, which runs almost straight south to the M25 and the M23. That single road is the reason Gatwick from Sutton is a comfortable half-hour and Heathrow is not.
About 20 miles and roughly 33 minutes down the A217 and onto the M23, or 20.3 miles and about 32 minutes if the M25 link is running better. Two routes, near-identical times, which is a good position to be in when one of them is closed.

This one surprises people every time. There are two sensible ways to Heathrow from Sutton:
Eleven miles shorter and a minute slower. The direct route crosses half a dozen south-west London town centres and the river; the motorway route is longer but it keeps moving. For a flight we take the motorway, because a predictable forty-five minutes beats an unpredictable forty-six. On a quiet Sunday the direct route wins. Luton and Stansted mean crossing or skirting London, so the departure time matters far more than the distance — a Stansted run at six in the morning and the same run at eight are different journeys. London City is straightforward off-peak. Southampton and Dover for cruises are regular summer bookings from Sutton.

But its postal county is still Surrey and its postcodes are SM, not a London prefix, which is why the letters, the bills and half the local businesses all say Surrey. Culturally it sits on the seam: a London town centre with a Surrey address.
