Clocktower Cars runs licensed taxis, cabs and minicabs in Belmont, SM2, twenty-four hours a day. Call 0208 643 2255 for a Belmont taxi, or book online and we will confirm the car and the price before you travel. Our Sutton office is a few minutes up the road.
Belmont is a village of a few thousand people in the London Borough of Sutton, just off the A217 and up against Banstead Downs, 10.8 miles south-south-west of Charing Cross. It is also where the Sutton site of the Royal Marsden Hospital stands — the specialist NHS cancer hospital, alongside the Institute of Cancer Research, which began life in 1909 as a research department of the Marsden itself.
People come to Belmont from across the south-east because of that hospital. It shapes what a taxi firm here is actually for.
Belmont station is the closest station to the Royal Marsden, just under half a mile away. On a map that is a ten-minute walk. After a morning of treatment it is not, and anyone who has done it knows that. Nor is it half a mile if you have come from Brighton or Guildford with a relative, a bag and a two-hour wait already behind you.
That gap — between the distance on the map and the distance in practice — is most of our Belmont work.
Our medical appointment transport is built around the way hospital days actually run rather than the way they are scheduled.
We are a private hire firm and nothing more than that — we have no arrangement with the hospital and we are not a patient transport service. Hospital transport for those eligible is arranged by the NHS, and it is worth asking whether you qualify before paying for a car. What we can offer is a car that turns up, a price agreed first, and a driver who has done the journey before.
0208 643 2255 — our Sutton office at 5 Carshalton Road, SM1 4LE, which covers Belmont, Sutton, Carshalton and Cheam. Answered by a person, twenty-four hours a day. 01372 747 747 is the Epsom head office.
People search for Belmont taxis, Belmont cabs and Belmont minicabs and mean one thing: a licensed car with a licensed driver, arriving when asked, at a price agreed first. We are a private hire operator, so every journey is pre-booked; there is nothing to flag down in a village this size anyway. The difference between a minicab and a black cab is written up if it matters to you.
Worth saying plainly and early, because it is the commonest reason people reach this page and leave disappointed. Clocktower Cars does not hire out self-drive cars, vans or campervans. We do not rent vehicles, we do not do dual-control or driving-instructor hire, and we do not do servicing or repairs. Every car we run comes with a licensed driver in it.
If what you actually want is a car and a driver for a stretch of time, that we can do: a day booking or a half day for a run of appointments, a funeral, a day of viewings; an eight-seater for a group instead of a rented minibus you would have to drive; or a standing weekday arrangement. Ring the office and we will price it. If you need a self-drive vehicle, a rental company is what you want and we hope you find one quickly.
Belmont station sits on the Epsom Downs line in London fare zone 5, 16 miles 1 chain from London Bridge measured via West Croydon. It is a small station on a branch, which has two consequences worth knowing.
Station Approach is small. Tell the office exactly where you will be standing and the driver will come to you rather than circling. If the train is late, ring us and we will move the booking.
Belmont has the clearest airport preference of anywhere we cover, and it is not close.
| From Belmont to | Distance | Typical drive | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gatwick | 16.0 miles | ~25 min | M23 |
| Heathrow | 34.8 miles | ~47 min | M25 |
| Heathrow (shorter route) | 30.0 miles | ~49 min | M25 and Southern Perimeter Road |
Gatwick is less than half the distance of Heathrow and roughly half the time. Twenty-five minutes down the M23 against three quarters of an hour round the M25. If you have a choice of flight, that difference is worth more than most people assume, particularly for a 6am departure when the M25 is the only part of the journey that can go wrong.
The third row makes the other point. There is a shorter way to Heathrow — 4.8 miles less driving — and it takes two minutes longer. Distance and time are not the same thing, which is why we quote journeys rather than publishing a price per mile.
Twenty-five minutes on a clear run. For a 6am departure with a two-hour check-in that is a pickup around 3.15am — the hour when a pre-booked car matters and an app is a gamble. On returns we track the inbound flight number and set the pickup by the actual landing time, not the scheduled one. More on the Gatwick transfers page.
We cover all of them, plus the cruise ports and the Eurotunnel terminal — see the airport transfer service. Heathrow is the long one from here and is quoted as such. If you want the driver inside arrivals with a name board rather than waiting in a car park, that is meet and greet, and it earns its keep when you are landing with children or luggage.
Five things, and only the first is distance.
Give us the journey and you get a figure before you commit. That figure is what you pay; it does not move because the traffic did. For anyone travelling to the same place regularly, ask about an account — it is usually the cheapest way to do it and it removes the payment from the kerb entirely.
Belmont sits with Banstead Downs on its doorstep — 126.7 hectares, 313 acres, a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest of wooded areas and wide open fields, with Saxon burial mounds on the site that are a Scheduled Monument. The Downs form the path from Belmont Village and Brighton Road up to Banstead, which is a pleasant walk in June and a long dark one in January.
Practically, for a booking: the Downs have several access points spread over a wide perimeter and almost no street lighting. Name the road or the car park, not “the Downs”.
With 313 acres of downland on the doorstep this is dog-walking country, and a dog is the commonest reason a booking falls apart at the kerb. We run pet-friendly taxis with drivers who have agreed in advance to carry animals. Tell us the size of the dog and whether it travels in a crate when you book, not when the car arrives. Assistance dogs travel as of right and need no notice, though it helps the driver to know.
Belmont is a small village between two larger centres, so its school run mostly goes out of the village — towards Sutton, Cheam, Banstead and Epsom. The London Borough of Sutton’s selective schools pull pupils across a wide radius, which makes these journeys longer and more cross-town than the map suggests.
We run school taxis in Belmont as standing term-time bookings: same pickup, same time, same named driver wherever the rota allows. For a child making the same journey 190 mornings a year, a familiar driver is worth more than a marginally cheaper fare.
Drivers carrying children are licensed and DBS-checked. Child seats and boosters are provided when you tell us the child’s age and weight at the time of booking — not on the morning. If the school requires a named driver on a list, we will supply the details.
Two or three families going to the same school at the same time can share one booking and split it. Parents arrange that between themselves; we run the route and invoice whoever you nominate.
We run wheelchair-accessible vehicles with ramp access, proper restraints and drivers trained to use them. Given what is in this village, it is worth being direct about the constraint: there are fewer accessible vehicles than saloons and they are often committed days ahead. A day’s notice is comfortable, an hour is optimistic, and for a course of appointments it is worth booking the whole series at once.
Belmont is mostly residential, but the research and clinical work in the village brings visitors, and a good deal of our account work here is people coming to a site rather than commuting from one.
For visitor collections and airport runs where the car is part of the impression, we run executive vehicles and a corporate chauffeur service: a smarter car, a driver in a suit, a fixed price agreed in advance. There is also a same-day courier service for items rather than people.
| From Belmont to | Distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Gatwick Airport | 16.0 miles | ~25 min |
| Heathrow Airport | 34.8 miles | ~47 min |
| London Bridge by train | 16 miles 1 chain | — |
A coincidence worth noticing: Gatwick by road and London Bridge by rail are both almost exactly sixteen miles from Belmont. One of them takes twenty-five minutes.
The branch locator will tell you which of our offices is nearest to any address.
The hospital appointment, the airport run, the station car, the school contract, the wheelchair-accessible vehicle, the dog, the eight-seater. One office, one account, one number: 0208 643 2255.
Sutton is minutes away and a person answers the phone at any hour. If a driver is late you speak to someone who can see where the car is. That matters most on the day it matters most — and in a village with a hospital in it, that day comes round more often than average.
Every car is a licensed private hire vehicle, every driver is licensed, and every journey is insured for hire and reward. Because the booking goes through the office there is a record of who drove you, when, and where — which matters most for children, elderly relatives, anyone unwell, and anybody travelling alone at night.
You get the figure on the call or in the booking confirmation. No meter, no surge multiplier, and no change because the M25 had a bad afternoon. If the job changes — an extra stop, an extra passenger, a longer wait — we tell you what that changes before the car sets off.
Card in the car, card over the phone, or on account. Account customers are invoiced monthly and never handle payment at the kerb, which is the point of an account for anyone making the same journey week after week.

Yes, regularly. Tell us which entrance or department if you know it, whether the return is fixed or open, and whether anyone needs help to the door or a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. We will hold an open return for an appointment that overruns. We have no arrangement with the hospital and we are not an NHS patient transport service — if you might be eligible for NHS transport, it is worth asking the hospital before paying for a car.
Just under half a mile — Belmont is the closest station to the hospital. It is a short walk if you are well and a long one if you are not, which is why so many of our Belmont bookings cover exactly that distance.
No. We are a taxi and private hire operator, not a rental company — no self-drive cars, vans or campervans, no dual-control hire, no servicing or repairs. What we can do instead is a car with a driver for a day or half day, or an eight-seater for a group. Ring the office and we will price it.
Yes. The office is staffed around the clock and cars run through the night. The honest caveat: a pre-booked car at four in the morning is guaranteed and an on-demand one is not, because fewer drivers are on at that hour. Early flights and late returns should always be booked ahead.
About 25 minutes for 16.0 miles down the M23, measured on 26 September 2026. Belmont is unusually close to Gatwick — closer than most of the towns we cover.
About 47 minutes for 34.8 miles round the M25 — more than twice the distance of Gatwick and nearly twice the time. There is a route 4.8 miles shorter that takes two minutes longer, which is why we quote the journey rather than the mileage.
The Epsom Downs line, in London fare zone 5, 16 miles 1 chain from London Bridge measured via West Croydon. It is a branch-line station, which is why so many journeys from Belmont are quicker by road than by rail.
Yes. We run wheelchair-accessible vehicles with ramp access, restraints and trained drivers. Book as far ahead as you can — there are fewer accessible vehicles than saloons and they are often committed days in advance. For a course of appointments, book the series in one go. Tell us whether the passenger stays in the chair, what type of chair it is, and whether a carer is travelling.
Yes, with notice, so we can send a driver who has agreed to carry animals. Tell us the size of the dog and whether it travels in a crate. Assistance dogs travel as of right and need no notice.
Yes. The Downs run to 313 acres with several access points and very little lighting, so name the road or the car park rather than “the Downs” and the driver will find you first time.
It depends on the journey rather than the mileage, which is why we quote instead of publishing a rate card. The price is set by how long the journey actually takes, the time of day, the vehicle, whether the car returns empty, and any waiting or extras. Ring 0208 643 2255 with the pickup, the destination and the time and you will have a fixed figure before you commit. For repeated journeys, ask about an account.
Call 0208 643 2255 for a Belmont taxi, or book online and we will confirm the car and the price. Twenty-four hours a day, every day.
