Chessington is thirteen and a half miles from Heathrow — and about thirty-eight minutes away. Those two numbers do not look as though they belong together, and the reason they do is the most useful thing on this page.
There is no motorway on this line. The quick way from Chessington runs north-west on the A308, through suburban south-west London and across the river, with traffic lights most of the way. Twenty-three miles from Leatherhead takes thirty minutes because almost all of it is M25. Thirteen and a half miles from Chessington takes thirty-eight because none of it is.
| Measure | Chessington to Heathrow |
|---|---|
| Road distance | 13.5 miles |
| Free-flowing drive time | about 38 minutes |
| Route | A308 north-west, across the river |
| Alternative | out to the A3 and round the M25 — further, sometimes quicker |
| Terminals | all four; the central terminals are the natural approach |
Two honest options. The direct A308 line is shorter and in the early hours it wins easily. In the morning and evening peaks, when the river crossings and the Kingston approaches are loaded, going out to the A3 and round the M25 is longer in miles and can be quicker in minutes. A driver who works this corridor makes that call before setting off. An app that has only ever seen the shortest line does not.
A rate per mile would have to charge a Chessington passenger roughly half what it charges someone travelling from Leatherhead, for a journey that occupies the car eight minutes longer. That is not a pricing quirk; it is the reason we quote each journey instead of publishing a rate card. Our guide to what actually decides a taxi price works through the arithmetic.
Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator rather than a hackney carriage firm, so every journey is booked in advance through the office — we cannot be flagged down and we do not work ranks. Because the office sees the whole journey first it can price it up front, which on a route this exposed to traffic lights is worth more than any headline rate: a slow crawl through Kingston is our problem, not an addition to your bill.
Chessington is in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, so private hire work here sits under Transport for London. Our drivers and vehicles are licensed by TfL among seven authorities, alongside Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley, Elmbridge, Guildford and Waverley, and we run two offices in Chessington. The operator licence is held as Epsom & Ewell Cars T/A Clocktower Cars.
More than usually important here. Night, very early morning, Sunday and bank holiday work costs more to staff — but it is also when this particular route is at its fastest, because the A308 is empty. A 4am run and a 5pm run of identical length are very different jobs.
Four adults with four hold bags and four cabin bags will not fit in a saloon. An estate takes four with real boot space; six and eight-seaters take groups and families with pushchairs, ski bags or golf clubs. Each awkward item changes which car is sent, so each needs declaring when you book.
On an arrival the pickup is set against the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and reclaim. Waiting beyond that is chargeable.
Child seats, step-free access, a wheelchair, a pet travelling, an extra pickup in Tolworth or Surbiton on the way. Cheaper designed in than improvised — see our accessible taxi page.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and re-entering triggers it again. It is the airport’s charge rather than a taxi firm’s, and we say when it applies. Source: Heathrow Airport — drop-off charge. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount even when they are not driving, registered against the registration of the car bringing them.
Our cars do not carry card terminals, so bring cash if you have not paid in advance. The detail is on our pricing and payment methods page.
Thirteen and a half miles by road, and about thirty-eight minutes. It is one of the closest places we serve to the airport by distance and one of the slower journeys by time, because the quick route runs north-west on the A308 through suburban south-west London and across the river rather than onto a motorway.
Because there is no motorway on this line. The A308 and the roads around it carry local traffic, bus routes and a river crossing, with traffic lights the whole way. A journey of the same length that joins the M25 takes about half as long. This is the clearest example on our patch of why distance and time are different things.
It depends on the hour, the terminal, the vehicle your luggage needs and whether waiting is involved, so we quote each journey rather than publish a figure. Call 01372 747 747 with the flight and the bag count and you will have the price before you book. We do not publish a rate per mile, and the thirteen-miles-in-thirty-eight-minutes figure above is exactly why.
Sometimes, and the driver decides on the day. Going out to the A3 and round the M25 is further in miles and can be quicker when the A308 and the river crossings are busy. In the early hours the direct route usually wins outright.
Yes, and early departures are most of this work. The pickup is set against your airline’s bag-drop deadline rather than the drive time, and before six the direct route is at its quickest.

Yes. For five to eight passengers one larger vehicle is normally cheaper than two cars and always simpler at the terminal. Give us the passenger count and the bag count separately and we will confirm what fits.
