Surbiton is eleven and four tenths of a mile from Heathrow. The journey takes about thirty-six minutes. Those two figures look wrong together, and the reason they are not is the most useful thing we can tell you about booking a car from here.
| Measure | Surbiton to Heathrow |
|---|---|
| Road distance | 11.4 miles |
| Free-flowing drive time | about 36 minutes |
| Route | A308 north-west, across the river |
| Alternative | out to the A3 and round the M25 — further, sometimes quicker |
| Terminals | all four; the central terminals are the natural approach |
There is no motorway on this line. The A308 and the roads it feeds carry local traffic, bus routes and a river crossing, with traffic lights the whole way. Nothing about the journey is fast, and nothing about it gets faster by being short.
Set it against another journey we run every week:
| Journey | Road distance | Free-flowing time |
|---|---|---|
| Surbiton to Heathrow | 11.4 miles | about 36 minutes |
| Fetcham to Heathrow | 23.9 miles | about 33 minutes |
Fetcham is more than twice as far from the airport and arrives three minutes sooner, because it joins the M25 at junction 9 and drives. Both of those are the fastest route available, measured on the same day.
This is why we do not publish a price per mile. A per-mile rate would have to charge a Surbiton passenger roughly half what it charges a Fetcham passenger, for a journey that occupies the car and the driver slightly longer. It is not a quirk, it is the geography of south-west London, and it is the reason every journey here is quoted rather than taken off a rate card. Our guide to what actually decides a taxi price works through the rest of the arithmetic.
Two honest options. The direct A308 line is shorter and in the small hours it wins easily. In the peaks, when the river crossings and the Kingston approaches are loaded, going out to the A3 and round the M25 is longer in miles and can be quicker in minutes. A driver who works this corridor decides before setting off; an app that only sees the shortest line does not.
Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator rather than a hackney carriage firm, so every journey comes through the office as a booking — we cannot be flagged down and we do not work ranks. Because the office sees the whole journey first it can price it up front, which on a route made of traffic lights is worth more than any headline rate: a slow crawl is our problem rather than an addition to your bill.
Surbiton is in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, so private hire work here sits under Transport for London. Our drivers and vehicles are licensed by TfL among seven authorities, alongside Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley, Elmbridge, Guildford and Waverley, and we run an office in Kingston. The operator licence is held as Epsom & Ewell Cars T/A Clocktower Cars.
More important here than almost anywhere. Night, very early morning, Sunday and bank holiday work costs more to staff — and is also when this route is at its fastest. A 4am run and a 5pm run over the same eleven miles are very different jobs.
Four adults with four hold bags and four cabin bags will not fit in a saloon. An estate carries four with real boot space; six and eight-seaters carry groups. Golf clubs, ski bags, a pushchair, a bike in a box, a dog crate — each changes which car is sent, so each needs declaring when you book.
On an arrival the pickup is set against the actual landing time, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and reclaim; waiting beyond it is chargeable.
Child seats, step-free access, a wheelchair, a pet travelling, an extra pickup in Tolworth or Kingston on the way — all cheaper designed in than improvised. See our accessible taxi page.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and re-entering triggers it again. It is the airport’s charge rather than a taxi firm’s, and we say when it applies. Source: Heathrow Airport — drop-off charge. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount even when they are not driving, registered against the registration of the car bringing them.
Our cars do not carry card terminals, so bring cash if you have not paid in advance. The detail is on our pricing and payment methods page.
Eleven and four tenths of a mile by road — and about thirty-six minutes. It is one of the shortest Heathrow journeys we run and one of the slowest, because the direct line goes north-west on the A308 and across the river through suburban traffic lights rather than onto a motorway.
No motorway. The A308 and the roads around it carry local traffic, buses and a river crossing, with lights all the way. For comparison, Fetcham is 23.9 miles from Heathrow — more than twice as far — and takes about thirty-three minutes, because it joins the M25 and drives. Distance and time are different things on this side of Surrey.
It depends on the hour, the terminal, the vehicle your luggage needs and whether waiting is involved, so we quote each journey rather than publish a rate. The Surbiton and Fetcham comparison above is exactly why a price per mile cannot work: it would charge half as much for a journey that takes three minutes longer.
Sometimes. Going out to the A3 and round is further in miles and can be quicker when the river crossings and the Kingston approaches are loaded. In the early hours the direct A308 line usually wins outright, and the driver makes the call on the day.
Yes, and early departures are most of this work. Before six the A308 is clear and the journey is at its quickest, which is part of why airport runs from here are usually booked early.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, every day of the year, and re-entering charges again. That is the airport’s charge rather than ours. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount, registered against the vehicle registration, even when they are not driving.

Yes. For five to eight passengers one larger vehicle is usually cheaper than two cars and always simpler at the terminal, because everybody arrives together. Give us the passenger count and the bag count separately.
