Cheam is twenty-eight and six tenths of a mile from Heathrow, about forty-three minutes when the roads are clear. What makes this journey worth planning rather than guessing is that it depends on two roads instead of one: out to the A3, then round the M25. Either can fail independently, and in the morning peak both often do.
This page sets out the measured route, what decides the price of a booked car, the charge on the journey that belongs to the airport, and the question most Cheam passengers should ask before they book their flights at all.
| Measure | Cheam to Heathrow |
|---|---|
| Road distance | 28.6 miles |
| Free-flowing drive time | about 43 minutes |
| Route | A3 out, then the M25 to the airport spur |
| Rail | no direct service — changes with luggage |
| Terminals | all four; Terminal 5 is the first you reach from the M25 |
Most Surrey airport runs hang on one road. This one hangs on two. The A3 northbound in the morning peak is slow by habit rather than by incident, and the M25 between the A3 junction and the airport is one of the busiest stretches in the country. A driver who works this corridor knows which of the two is misbehaving before setting off, and the alternative lines — up through Kingston on the A308, or across to the M25 further east — are judgement calls made in advance rather than from inside a queue.
From Cheam, Gatwick is a shorter and more predictable run than Heathrow. If your flight could leave from either, ask us for both figures while the tickets are still refundable. A cheaper fare that costs an extra half hour each way on the road is not always the bargain it looked like. Our Gatwick transfers page covers that side.
Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator rather than a hackney carriage firm, so every journey comes through the office as a booking — we cannot be flagged down and we do not work ranks. Because the office sees the whole journey first it can price it up front. On a route that depends on both the A3 and the M25, that matters: the agreed figure is the figure you pay, and a bad morning on either road is our problem rather than an addition to your bill.
Cheam is in the London Borough of Sutton, so private hire work here sits under Transport for London. Our drivers and vehicles are licensed by TfL among seven authorities, alongside Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley, Elmbridge, Guildford and Waverley. The operator licence is held as Epsom & Ewell Cars T/A Clocktower Cars.
Nights, very early mornings, Sundays and public holidays cost more to staff. On this route the early start also buys a quicker journey, because neither the A3 nor the M25 is working hard before six.
Four adults with four hold bags and four cabin bags do not fit in a saloon, whatever the seat count says. An estate takes four with real boot space; six and eight-seaters take groups. Golf clubs, ski bags, a pushchair, a bike in a box, a dog crate — each changes which car is sent, so each needs declaring when you book.
On an arrival the pickup is set against the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and reclaim. Waiting beyond it is chargeable.
Child seats, step-free access, a wheelchair, a pet travelling, an extra pickup in Sutton or Worcester Park on the way. Cheaper designed in than improvised — see our accessible taxi page.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and re-entering triggers it again. It is the airport’s charge rather than a taxi firm’s, and we tell you when it applies. Source: Heathrow Airport — drop-off charge. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount even when they are not driving, registered against the registration of the car bringing them.
Our cars do not carry card terminals, so bring cash if you have not paid in advance. The detail is on our pricing and payment methods page, and the reasoning behind quoting rather than publishing a rate card is in our guide to what actually decides a taxi price.
Twenty-eight and six tenths of a mile by road, about forty-three minutes in free-flowing traffic. The route runs out to the A3 and then round the M25, so two different roads have to behave for the journey to go to plan.
Work back from your airline’s bag-drop deadline, add the forty-three minutes, then add a margin for both the A3 and the M25. In the morning peak either one can add half an hour on its own, which is why we set the departure against your check-in rather than the drive time.
It depends on the hour, the terminal, the vehicle your luggage needs and whether waiting or flight tracking is involved, so we quote each journey rather than publish a figure that would go out of date. Call 01372 747 747 with the flight and the bag count and you will have the price before you book.
By road, yes, and noticeably so. If your flight could leave from either airport it is worth asking us for both before you book the tickets rather than afterwards. Our Gatwick page covers that side of the work.
Yes, though North Cheam has its own page because it is a different pickup area with a different run out to the main roads. Either way the booking is taken the same way and priced the same way.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, every day of the year, and re-entering charges again. That is the airport’s charge rather than ours. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount, registered against the vehicle registration, even when they are not driving.
On a booked collection we track the inbound flight and set the pickup against the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and baggage reclaim.
Yes. For five to eight passengers one larger vehicle is normally cheaper than two cars and always simpler at the terminal, because everybody arrives together. Give us the passenger count and the bag count separately.
