Carshalton is thirty-seven and two tenths of a mile from Heathrow, and about fifty-six minutes away in clear traffic. That makes it one of the longest Heathrow journeys we run — further than Godalming, and considerably further than Leatherhead, despite sitting much closer to central London than either.
The reason is roads rather than geography. There is no direct north-westerly line from this corner of south London to the airport, so the practical route goes out and round the M25. That single fact should shape how you plan the journey, and this page is mostly about doing that properly.
| Measure | Carshalton to Heathrow |
|---|---|
| Road distance | 37.2 miles |
| Free-flowing drive time | about 56 minutes |
| Route | out to the M25, then round to the airport spur |
| Rail | no direct service — changes with luggage |
| Terminals | all four; Terminal 5 is the first you reach from the M25 |
Fifty-six minutes is the free-flowing figure, on a route almost entirely dependent on the M25. In the morning peak, or when that motorway has an incident, this journey can run well over an hour and a quarter. It is the single strongest argument on this page for booking a car rather than driving: somebody else is watching the road, and the price does not move while you sit in it.
From this side of south London Gatwick is a far shorter run than Heathrow. If your flight could go from either, ask us for both figures before you book the tickets. People routinely discover afterwards that the cheaper fare cost them an extra hour each way on the road. Our Gatwick transfers page covers that side.
Coming up the M25 you reach Terminal 5 first; the central terminals and Terminal 4 mean carrying on round the site. On a journey this long the terminal is also worth confirming for the return — a kerbside pickup and a meet and greet inside the terminal are different bookings.
Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator rather than a hackney carriage firm, so every journey comes through the office as a booking. We cannot be flagged down and we do not work ranks. Because the office sees the whole journey first, the price is agreed before the car moves — which on a fifty-six-minute motorway run is the difference between a known cost and an open-ended one. A meter would keep earning every minute the M25 was stationary.
Carshalton is in the London Borough of Sutton, so private hire work here sits under Transport for London. Our drivers and vehicles are licensed by TfL among seven authorities, alongside Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley, Elmbridge, Guildford and Waverley, and we run an office in Carshalton. The operator licence is held as Epsom & Ewell Cars T/A Clocktower Cars.
Nights, very early mornings, Sundays and public holidays cost more to staff. On this route the early start also buys a materially quicker journey, because the M25 before six is a different road from the M25 at eight.
Four adults with four hold bags and four cabin bags do not fit in a saloon. An estate carries four with real boot space; six and eight-seaters carry groups. Golf clubs, ski bags, a pushchair, a bike in a box, a dog crate — each changes which car is sent, so each needs declaring at the booking stage rather than at the kerb.
On an arrival the pickup is set against the actual landing time, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and reclaim; waiting beyond it is chargeable.
Child seats, step-free access, a wheelchair, a pet travelling, an extra pickup in Wallington or Sutton on the way. All cheaper designed in than improvised — our accessible taxi page covers the ramped vehicles.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and re-entering triggers it again. It is the airport’s charge rather than a taxi firm’s, and we say when it applies. Source: Heathrow Airport — drop-off charge. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount even when they are not driving, registered against the registration of the car bringing them.
Our cars do not carry card terminals, so bring cash if you have not paid in advance. The detail is on our pricing and payment methods page, and the reasoning behind quoting rather than publishing a rate card is in our guide to what actually decides a taxi price.
Thirty-seven and two tenths of a mile by road, about fifty-six minutes in free-flowing traffic. It is one of the longest Heathrow runs we do, further than Godalming, because the M25 has to be joined the long way round — there is no direct line north-west from this corner of south London.
Because distance to an airport is about roads, not about where places sit on a map. From Carshalton the practical route goes out and round, which is why the mileage is high. The useful consequence is simple: this journey needs an earlier start than people expect, and we build the departure time around your bag drop rather than around the clock.
Work back from your airline’s bag-drop deadline, add the fifty-six minutes, then add a real margin for the M25. For a long-haul departure in the morning peak that usually means leaving earlier than feels necessary — which is still cheaper than a missed flight.
It depends on the hour, the terminal, the vehicle your luggage needs and whether waiting or flight tracking is involved, so we quote each journey rather than publish a figure that would date. Call 01372 747 747 with the flight and the bag count and you will have the price before you book.
Often, for exactly the reason above: this side of south London sits much closer to Gatwick than to Heathrow by road. If you have a choice of departure airport it is worth asking us for both before you book flights, not after.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, every day of the year, and re-entering charges again. That is the airport’s charge rather than ours. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount, registered against the vehicle registration, even when they are not driving.
Yes. The pickup is set against the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and baggage reclaim. On a journey this long that matters more, not less — nobody wants an hour in the car after an hour in arrivals.
Yes. For five to eight passengers one larger vehicle is normally cheaper than two cars and always simpler at the terminal, because everybody arrives together. Tell us the passenger count and the bag count separately.
