Ashtead is twenty-three and four tenths of a mile from Heathrow, about thirty-one minutes when the roads are clear. Like most of this part of Surrey the journey is really one road — up to the M25 at junction 9, then round to the airport — so the distance matters far less than what that motorway is doing on the morning you travel.
This page gives the measured route, sets out what decides the price of a booked car, covers the charge that belongs to the airport rather than to us, and answers one thing people often arrive here looking for that we cannot help with.
| Measure | Ashtead to Heathrow |
|---|---|
| Road distance | 23.4 miles |
| Free-flowing drive time | about 31 minutes |
| Route | up to the M25 at junction 9, then the airport spur |
| Rail | no direct service — at least one change with luggage |
| Terminals | all four; Terminal 5 is the first you reach |
Thirty-one minutes for twenty-three miles is a motorway figure, and motorway figures are the least dependable kind. The stretch of M25 between junction 9 and the airport is among the busiest in Britain and the one most often closed overnight for roadworks. When it is flowing this is a quick run. When it is not, the alternatives through Chessington and the A3, or across to Esher, are slower on a clear day and quicker on a bad one — a judgement the driver makes before setting off rather than from inside a queue.
Approaching from the M25 you reach Terminal 5 first. Terminals 2 and 3 in the central area and Terminal 4 to the south all mean carrying on round the site. It is a few minutes, and on a tight bag drop a few minutes is the entire question — so the terminal goes on the booking.
Worth saying plainly, because a surprising number of people reach this page searching for car rental in Ashtead. We do not rent out cars for you to drive yourself, and we never have. Every Clocktower Cars journey comes with a licensed driver.
If what you want is a car with a driver — an airport run, a day with several stops, a chauffeur-driven booking for a client or an event — that is precisely what we do, and it is all pre-booked through the office. If you want keys and a self-drive hire, a rental company is the right call and we would rather tell you that than waste your time.
Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator, not a hackney carriage firm, so we cannot be flagged down and we do not work ranks. Every journey comes through the office as a booking, which is also why the price can be agreed before the car moves: the office sees the whole journey first. A meter cannot do that, and on a route governed by one motorway that difference is the difference between a known cost and an open-ended one.
Ashtead is in Mole Valley, one of the seven authorities our drivers and vehicles are licensed across, with Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead, Elmbridge, Guildford, Waverley and Transport for London. The operator licence is held as Epsom & Ewell Cars T/A Clocktower Cars.
Night, very early morning, Sunday and bank holiday work costs more to staff, and most airport journeys from Ashtead leave before six. That hour is also when the M25 behaves best, so an early start buys a quicker run as well as a safer margin.
Four adults with four hold bags and four cabin bags do not fit in a saloon. An estate takes four with real boot space and is the right default for a family holiday; six and eight-seaters take groups. Golf clubs, ski bags, a pushchair, a bike in a box, a dog crate — each changes which car is sent, so each needs declaring when you book.
On an arrival the pickup is set against the actual landing time, with a free grace period after landing for immigration and reclaim. Waiting beyond that is chargeable; ask what the period is when you book.
Child seats, step-free access, a wheelchair, a pet travelling, an extra pickup in Leatherhead or Tadworth on the way. All of it is cheaper designed in than improvised at the door — our accessible taxi page sets out the ramped vehicles.
Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and leaving and re-entering triggers it again. It is the airport’s charge rather than a taxi firm’s, and we tell you when it applies. Source: Heathrow Airport — drop-off charge. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount even when they are not driving, registered against the registration of the car bringing them.
Our cars carry no card terminals, so bring cash if you have not paid in advance. The mechanics are on our pricing and payment methods page, and the reasoning behind quoting rather than publishing a rate card is in our guide to what actually decides a taxi price.
Twenty-three and four tenths of a mile by road, about thirty-one minutes in free-flowing traffic. The route runs up to the M25 at junction 9 and then round to the airport spur, so nearly the whole journey is motorway.
About thirty-one minutes when the M25 is moving. In the morning peak, or when the anticlockwise carriageway between junctions 9 and 13 has an incident, allow half as long again — there is no quick alternative once you are committed to that stretch.
It depends on the hour, the terminal, the vehicle your luggage needs and whether waiting or flight tracking is involved, so we quote each journey rather than publish a figure that would date. Call 01372 747 747 with the flight and the bag count and you will have the price before you book.
No. We are a private hire taxi operator, not a car rental firm — every journey comes with a licensed driver. If you were looking to rent a car and drive it yourself, that is not something we offer. If you want a car with a driver, for an airport run or anything else, that is exactly what we do.
No. Any rail route from Ashtead means at least one change, usually two, with your luggage. For a single traveller with a cabin bag in daylight that is workable; with hold bags, a family or an early bag drop a booked car door to door is the practical choice.
On a booked collection we track the inbound flight and set the pickup against the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one. There is a free grace period after landing for immigration and baggage reclaim, with waiting chargeable beyond it.

Yes. For five to eight passengers one larger vehicle is usually cheaper than two cars and always simpler at the terminal, because everybody arrives together. Tell us the passenger count and the bag count separately.
