Thirteen minutes is the free-flowing figure and it is realistic at four in the morning, which is when a good share of this work happens. It is not realistic at eight on a weekday, when the A30 and the perimeter road both carry airport traffic and the M25 feeds into them. The terminal matters as well: Heathrow is a large site and Terminal 5 sits at the western end, so a Terminal 5 run and a Terminal 2 run are not the same journey even from five miles away.
Short journeys are the ones people cut fine, and an airport run is the wrong journey to cut fine. We set the departure against your check-in time rather than the drive time, which usually means leaving earlier than the thirteen minutes suggests. The margin costs nothing. Missing a bag drop costs the holiday.

Night work, very early mornings, Sundays and public holidays cost more to staff, and a 4am Heathrow departure is a more expensive hour of a driver’s day than a 10am one. On a run this short that factor matters proportionally more than the mileage does.

Heathrow charges £7 for each entry into a terminal drop-off zone, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Leaving and re-entering triggers the charge again — so a clean single drop costs one entry, and circling back for a forgotten passport costs two.
