8-Seater Taxis: Capacity, Luggage and Where to Book One

An eight-seater taxi is the largest car most private hire firms send to a single booking, and it is the one people ask about when a group will not fit in anything smaller. This page answers the questions we are actually asked about them: how many people really fit, whether the driver counts as one of the eight, what happens to the luggage, and where to book one.

Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator covering Surrey and south-west London, with a twenty-four hour office. Every journey is quoted before you travel — call 01372 747 747 or book online and the price comes back to you before anything is agreed.

Does an Eight-Seater Taxi Include the Driver?

No — and this is the most common misunderstanding in the whole subject. In the private hire trade the number in “eight-seater” counts passenger seats, not the driver’s. An eight-seater is a vehicle licensed to carry up to eight passengers, with the driver in addition. So if there are eight of you, an eight-seater is the right car; you do not need to find a nine-seater.

Where it pays to be careful is that vehicles differ, and a licensing authority sets the passenger capacity for each one individually. When you book, the office confirms the passenger capacity of the vehicle it is sending. If your group is exactly eight, say so plainly on the call rather than asking for “a big car”, and the capacity will be checked rather than assumed.

What an Eight-Seater Taxi Actually Holds

Seats are the easy part. Luggage is what decides whether a booking works, because in almost every eight-seater the rearmost row of seats sits where the boot would be. The practical combinations look like this.

Seats in usePassengersRealistic luggageWorks for
All eight83 to 4 large cases plus soft bagsA full group travelling light — a day trip, an event, a night out
Seven74 to 5 large casesA group with one case each and nothing bulky
Six (one row folded)66 or more large casesSix people with full holiday luggage
Two vehiclesUp to 88 large cases plus cabin bagsEight people with a suitcase each

Eight seats, three or four cases

This is the configuration people picture when they book and the one that surprises them at the kerb. Eight adults fit comfortably. Their eight full-size suitcases do not, because the space those cases would occupy is where the eighth and seventh passengers are sitting. If you are eight with a case each, you are a two-car booking, and the office will tell you that when you ring rather than let the driver break the news.

Six seats and full luggage

Fold the back row down and the same vehicle becomes the best luggage car on the road: six seats and a boot that swallows six or seven large cases, a pushchair and a set of golf clubs. For a family of five or six going away for a fortnight, this is usually the right booking and it costs the same as the eight-seat configuration, because it is the same car.

Seven-seaters and MPVs

A seven-seater or a large MPV is often the same class of vehicle with a different layout, and for five to seven passengers it is usually the better choice: you keep a usable boot without paying for capacity you are not using. There is a full comparison on our guide to choosing taxi vehicle size, and a luggage-first version on what taxi size you need for airport luggage.

Where to Book an Eight-Seater Taxi

Large vehicles are the scarcest part of any private hire fleet, so an eight-seater is not something to look for on the day. It is booked in advance through an operator’s office, and there are three ways to do it with us.

By phone

Call 01372 747 747. The office is staffed twenty-four hours a day and this is the quickest route for a group, because the capacity question gets settled in the conversation rather than in an exchange of emails. For journeys starting in the Godalming area you can also call the Station Approach office on 01483 422 222.

Online

Use the online booking form with the passenger and luggage numbers in the detail field, and we will come back to you with the price and the vehicle. Put the group size in writing and it will be read by someone who knows what fits.

On a business account

If you move groups regularly — a company, a club, a school, a care provider — an account is usually the better arrangement: journeys are invoiced monthly rather than paid in the car, and the office holds your standing requirements. There is more on how accounts and payments work on the pricing and payment methods page.

What the office needs from you

Four things decide whether the booking is right, and all four are easier to settle at the time of booking than at the kerb:

  • The exact passenger count — adults and children separately, because child seats take seats
  • The real luggage count — large cases, cabin bags, pushchairs, sports equipment, instruments
  • Pick-up addresses and the time — one address or two, and when you need to be moving
  • Anything unusual — a wheelchair, a pet, an assistance dog, an awkward driveway, a flight to track

Give the office those and it will tell you what fits and what it costs, in one call.

Is It Hire, or a Taxi With a Driver?

People searching for an eight-seater sometimes mean self-drive rental and sometimes mean a car with a driver, and the two are completely different arrangements. To be plain about which we are: Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator and we do not rent out vehicles. Every booking comes with a licensed driver, a licensed vehicle and a price agreed in advance. If you want to drive an eight-seater yourself you need a hire company and, depending on the vehicle and when you passed your test, possibly a different licence category — that is not something we provide.

Eight-Seater Airport Transfers

Airport work is where most large-vehicle bookings go, and the airport changes the job. Each of these pages covers the journey, the measured drive times and the airport’s own charges:

One detail worth knowing before you compare quotes: Heathrow charges £7 for every entry into a terminal drop-off zone and Gatwick charges £10 for the first ten minutes, then £1 a minute up to twenty with a £30 daily cap. Those are the airports’ charges, not ours, and if your luggage means two cars then two cars pay. Blue Badge holders can claim a discount at Heathrow and are exempt at Gatwick, but it must be registered against the registration of the car carrying them — so mention it when you book. Figures were current when this page was reviewed in October 2026.

What Decides the Price of an Eight-Seater

We quote rather than publish a tariff, because for a large vehicle the variables are bigger than the distance. The hour and the day matter most — large cars are scarce and they all go out on the same peak mornings. Then comes the question of one vehicle or two, which is settled by the luggage rather than the seats. Then the journey itself: a motorway run can be quicker than a shorter cross-town one, which is why mileage alone is a poor guide. Then anything that needs planning in: child seats, a wheelchair, a pet, two pick-up addresses, a flight to track.

The full reasoning is set out on what decides the cost of a taxi, and the group-specific version, with the practical planning detail, on group airport transfers in eight-seaters. Either way you will have the figure before you commit.

Groups Larger Than Eight

Beyond eight passengers a single vehicle is no longer the answer. In practice there are two routes: multiple cars moving together, which the office coordinates so everyone arrives at the same time, or a minibus, which is a different booking with its own licensing. Larger groups can begin with our minibus page; otherwise ring the office with the numbers and it will build the booking round the luggage first. For a wedding, a corporate event or a sports fixture, give as much notice as you can — several large vehicles on the same morning is the hardest thing to arrange at short notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an 8 seater taxi include the driver?

No. In private hire, “eight-seater” counts passenger seats and the driver sits in addition, so an eight-seater is the right car for a group of eight. Capacity is set per vehicle by its licensing authority, and the office confirms the passenger capacity of the vehicle it is sending when you book.

Where can I book an 8 seater taxi?

Through an operator's office rather than on the street — large vehicles are pre-booked. Call Clocktower Cars on 01372 747 747, twenty-four hours a day, or use the online booking form with your passenger and luggage numbers and we will come back with the price and the vehicle.

Can an 8 seater taxi take eight people and eight suitcases?

No, and no eight-seater can. With all eight seats in use the rearmost row occupies the luggage space, leaving room for three or four large cases plus soft bags. Eight people with a case each is a two-vehicle booking.

How many suitcases fit in an 8 seater taxi?

Three to four large cases with all eight seats in use, four to five with seven seats, and six or more if a row is folded down and you travel six. Pushchairs, travel cots, golf clubs and ski bags each take roughly the space of a large case.

Is a 7 seater better than an 8 seater?

For five to seven passengers, usually yes. It is often the same class of vehicle with one fewer seat and a usable boot, so you keep luggage space without paying for capacity you will not use. Ask the office rather than defaulting to the biggest car.

Do you offer 8 seater taxi hire?

Not in the self-drive sense. Clocktower Cars is a licensed private hire operator, not a vehicle rental company: every booking comes with a licensed driver and a price agreed in advance. If you want to drive the vehicle yourself you need a hire company instead.

How far ahead should I book an 8 seater taxi?

As early as you can, and weeks rather than days for a peak morning. Large vehicles are the scarcest part of any fleet and groups all want the same slots — half-term Saturdays, bank holiday Fridays, the start of the summer holidays and the Christmas period.

Can you fit child seats in an 8 seater?

Yes. Give the children's ages and weights when you book so the right seats are fitted before the car leaves. Remember that a child seat occupies a passenger seat, so count the children in the passenger total.

Can an 8 seater pick up from two addresses?

Yes, and for family groups it is common. Give both addresses at the time of booking so the office can order the pick-ups sensibly and allow for the extra loading. It affects the quote, which is why it is agreed in advance.

What areas do you cover for 8 seater bookings?

Surrey and south-west London, from twelve offices including Epsom, Godalming, Guildford, Reigate, Kingston, Sutton, Carshalton, Chessington, Bookham, Ewell West and Weybridge, with drivers and vehicles licensed across seven authorities including Transport for London. Longer journeys out of the area are quoted on request.
