There is a route to Heathrow straight up the A244 that measures 12.8 miles. There is a route round via the M25 that measures 20.8 miles. The motorway route is eight miles further and ten minutes quicker — 29 mph against 14 mph.
Ten minutes is the widest time penalty we have measured for taking the short way anywhere in Surrey. A firm charging strictly per mile would send you up the A244, bill you for two-thirds of the distance, and get you to the terminal ten minutes later. The second surprise: Gatwick is 22.7 miles and about 29 minutes — nearly two miles further than Heathrow and fourteen minutes quicker, because it is motorway almost the whole way. Luton and Stansted are both long M25 runs from here and are worth booking the night before rather than the morning of.
